It’s that time of year when all we want to do is huddle in front of the fire with a good book and our joggers on. As tempting as that is, it’s worth remembering that winter is the perfect season for spending a bit of time on ourselves, especially as this means more time out and about in summer! IPL is one of those treatments that is made for the colder months. It uses broadband light to treat unwanted hair and therapists highly recommend staying out of the sun both before and after treatment. Perfect timing for those months when we mostly want to stay indoors anyway.
How does IPL work?
Intense Pulsed Light is a technologically advanced method using high-intensity pulses of visible light to improve the appearance of the skin, treat specific skin concerns and remove hair. With regards to hair removal, the colour of hair is determined by an amount of melanin, or pigmentation, found inside the hair follicle. IPL light energy targets the melanin inside the hair follicle. The amount of pigmentation in the follicle is reflected in the darkness in hair colour. Blonde, red, grey or white hairs are invisible to the light energy and therefore cannot be treated. The pigmentation is heated and destroys the active cells in the follicle that grow the hair. Once those cells are dead, the hair follicle can never grow hair again.
What kind of recovery should I expect?
There’s almost no downtime with IPL and you’ll be able to carry on with your day to day tasks as normal. The treated skin might become slightly pink, but nothing more than what a mild sunburn might look like. The main restriction is for patients to avoid sun exposure before and after, making winter a perfect time to book a course!
How many treatments are required?
On average 6 – 10 treatments are recommended for maximum loss of hair. This will depend on hair colour and thickness, skin colour and the area being treated.
