Brittle nails that peel or split into layers affect as much as 20 percent of the population.
If both your fingers and toe nails are splitting and peeling this could be caused by a health condition, but if only your fingernails are affected the cause is likely to be external. In most cases, moisture is the cause of splitting nails. Repeatedly wetting and drying your hands can cause the nails to dry out, leaving them brittle and splitting easily. Too much moisture can also weaken the nails, softening them and causing them to peel.
Tip: Wear gloves while hands are immersed in water to prevent nails softening and use products that contain forms of Essential Fatty Acids to relieve dry and brittle nails.
